Teaching

·      Adapted teaching tools to make lesson plans focused on specific age group

·      Trained and knowledgeable of development stages for early childhood up to middle school

·      Researched alternative teaching option for children with special need

For about 2 1/2 years I worked in the daycare system. I throughly enjoy children and getting to shape a part of their lives is a great honor. No two children are the same and therefore all have different needs. Finding new techniques and ways to engage 10 three year olds was one of my many responsibilities. In order to be a lead teacher for a preschool classroom, I had to do 20 hours of STARS training my first year and an additional 10 hours each year. This training gives one a grasp of development from ages 0 to 10 years. The additional times allowed me to build on the basic knowledge learning about things like: encouraging reading, teaching science and math to young children, and dealing with social and developmental issues.

This knowledge was extremely useful when working with one of my children who had Asperger's syndrome. When working with children who have disabilities, it is important to have a general knowledge of what they might be dealing with. Yet one must also recognize that the child has their own personality. This particular child did very well with organizing and creating. When he was struggling with the other children being in his personal space, redirecting him to an area that was less busy, where he could sit quietly and do puzzles or build a race track help him to calm down. Teaching healthy interaction with others was important as well. We worked on "gentle hands" and the proper way to touch others. He enjoyed being with his friends and grew to learn how to manage his feelings.
Children are very capable and wish to show their independence. Giving them tasks they can handle or can be done with some support allows them to reach their full potential.

These pictures are just some of the children I have worked with over the years. They are still very dear to my heart.
