Professional Experience

·       2010 March-Present                 Washington Vocational Services: Employment Specialist
My most recent employment opportunity has allowed me to work with a population for which I had only limited experience. Washington Vocational Services provides services for those with disabilities who are seeking employment. Client come with many different skills and abilities; WVS works to help find jobs that suit each client individually. In addition to finding advertised jobs, they also do what is called Job Carving. This is where an Employment Specialist works with a business to create a job that is unique to a specific client. WVS Employment Specialists help take their clients from job preparation, to searching for jobs, and to being employed - supporting and advocating for them along the way

·      2008 April-2010 March             A Child’s Life Learning Center: Lead Teacher & Administrative Assistant
A Child's Life Learning Center is a wonderful, caring environment for the children they serve. I was a lead teacher for the 3 year old room. I could have up to 10 students a day, and we  enjoyed lots of activities throughout the day. ACLLC helps to nurture children by allowing them to have both group and individual interactions. Children all have their own learning styles and it is important to support the child in their education. As a Teacher I would plan group activities, work one-on-one with each child and create an environment conducive to learning. In addition to being a Teacher, I also interned as an Administrative Assistant. I was in charge of creating the schedule for the staff, facilitated a staff meeting and discovered new avenues for funding.

·      2009 March-December              Womencare Shelter: Coverage Team & Women’s Support Advocate
Womencare Shelter is the only secret domestic violence shelter in the Whatcom County area. I spent 6 months with the agency through my internships. Womencare empowers women fleeing domestic violence and helps them to plan for their future. As a Coverage Team Member, I was responsible for doing paper work, checking in with women, and answering the 24-hour crisis line. All of these functions are important to help the shelter run smoothly. When transitioning to a Women's Support Advocate, I still did many of the duties of the Coverage Team; however, I also facilitated one-on-one meetings with women. I discussed topics such as: housing, food and tangible needs, and general life. Keeping the women positive and looking toward a bright future was something I enjoyed immensely.
